Eva Shaw is a music producer based in Los Angeles. She started her music career making electric songs and has now found her place in the hip-hop-producing scene. While growing up in Toronto, Shaw spent a lot of time alone. She mentioned that being alone helped her with the ability to express herself and that she learned to feel comfortable being herself. She moved from Toronto to New York as soon as she could and worked as an actor and a model. Now she’s a music producer; “I know it sounds cheesy, but [music] kind of chose me”, Shaw said. She’s based in Los Angeles and says that she’s “locked up on the computer all the time producing music.”
“I didn’t start DJing hip-hop, and I didn’t start producing hip-hop because I was making songs to play on my DJ set”, Shaw said. “I kind of got pushed into one genre because that’s how I started, and I didn’t think it through. I was just like oh this is fun, and people kept signing my electronic records. And I was like, well this isn’t really exactly what I want to do, because I want to be more of an artist and I think since I started making my career in music, it kind of clicked.”
Shaw also sings and writes songs, though “usually the production side of the song [takes] way longer [to make]” she said. “Electronically […] it’s all about the DJ and the producer, and the vocalists are sort of secondary. And then in hip-hop, it’s the complete opposite,” Shaw said. “So I was sort of like, why can’t I do the production and be the artist, but in hip hop […]. It’s partly why I started singing too. If I want to be in my music videos, I want to be doing something.”
She recently came out with “Calabasas”, a song that she produced, co-wrote the lyrics for, and sings in. The song is part of her EP: Hype Hop, which just came out, this September 17th. BTK Villeion is a feature in the song, and the music video just came out on September 29th. In “Calabasas”, she sings about flying in a private jet, and yes she actually does have some private jet stories. It’s inspiring for her to think about where she is now, considering where she came from. That is part of how her lyrics came about, though a lot of her lyrics are also inspired by an aggression, which she says she gets from producing music all day on the computer.

Although she feels shy, she has confidence while performing. Now that she isn’t modelling anymore, she feels less self-conscious and enjoys playing with the “weirdness of fashion” and art. She has a lot of fashion connections and has even started designing herself. Though the ski mask that she designed sold old, it will be stocked up again this October.
Music-wise, Shaw doesn’t take a day off. She has lots of plans for the future, including more music videos, and is coming out with a new album at the end of November.
