Rapper and singer Emma Beko just released her new single “sadguitar_V777.wav.” It’s a song that can hype you up, and make you sad at the same time.
“Sadguitar_V777.wav” is Beko’s first song with musician and producer CFCF. When she reached out to him and found out that he was in Montreal, she met with him in person for various sessions to collaborate on her song. She knew that she wanted an electric guitar song, and that’s how the song’s name came to be. Since it’s more of a personal and vulnerable song, it never changed from its original demo filename, because its intention wasn’t for it to be very public or popular. “It’s a song encapsulating all of our darkest thoughts and insecurities, the ones we aren’t able to say out loud to others or even to ourselves,” Beko said. She also mentioned that she was “expecting 0 radio plays”. Ironically, some stations, including CBC, asked her for a clean version of the song to play.

“I reached a success for myself, I’m not half where I want to get to. But I’ve reached milestones and goals that I had set myself to do. I reached them, and I’m really proud, and it gives me a lot of confidence. Then sometimes, I don’t feel confident at all. So in the song [“sadguitar_V777.wav”], even in the chorus, it’s this confusion of like who am I really? I’m confused. Am I this strong, independent, tough, motivated person, or am I this like really insecure, shy, introverted, isolated person […] and I’m definitely both” Beko said.
Beko doesn’t push too much for a song to be released if the whole process doesn’t flow. “I had a verse or part of a verse in it, that I wrote last year before I started putting out all my [own] music. It was cool to use something that I had written in such a different state of mind,” Beko said. “It was just fun to kind of explore those moments where I feel down, and the moments where I feel happy, and then kind of meld them together.” Not only does “Sadguitar_V777.wav” have lyrics that express a mixture of emotions, but the music video does as well. Beko directed and edited her own music video, and has even created a karaoke video version of the song. Both are accessible on her YouTube channel.
Beko plans to feature music videos for her upcoming songs. When she was younger, she wanted to become a movie director. Even as a child, Beko had “always danced and sang a lot”, and put on performances for her family. In 2010, when she was 18, she got into professional singing after becoming a singing duo with her childhood friend, Gab Godon. They called themselves Heartstreets. Beko and Godon didn’t expect their music duo to go anywhere, they just wanted to make music. To their surprise, however, their duo took off. Beko was making music with Heartstreets, until she started working on her first solo project at the same time, in 2020. When the pandemic hit, Beko couldn’t meet up with Godon anymore, to make music with her. She kept working on her solo music, and since then, the two have evolved into solo artists.
Next year, Beko will be performing live and touring her EP, which will be coming out in early 2022. Her EP won’t contain one similar genre of music, instead, it’s a “mood more than a genre.”
